| Since the launch of the initiative to rid the world of polio, the number of polio cases in the world has been reduced by over 99 percent, from more than 350,000 a year in the 1980s to about 1,650 in 2008. Over two billion children have been vaccinated and the number of countries where polio is endemic has fallen from 125 to 4 (Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria). Focus on the crocus is an initiative to raise awareness of the campaign to End Polio Now. The Club has purchased 5000 Ruby Giant purple crocus bulbs (purple is the colour of the dye dabbed onto a childs finger to show that he/she has been immunised), for planting in Dulwich and Peckham. One thousand bulbs have already been planted in Brunswick Park and two hundred have been given to the children at Dulwich Pre-School (plus pots and compost) to plant and take home. More bulbs will be set into the ground in Dulwich Park. The bulbs are due to flower in February.
